External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar revealed that approximately 75% of the disengagement issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China have been addressed. This statement was made during his visit to Geneva, where he is attending bilateral meetings. The minister highlighted that this achievement reflects significant progress in resolving military standoffs that have strained India-China relations since the clashes in Galwan Valley in June 2020.
Jaishankar noted that while substantial progress has been made, the situation remains complex. He pointed out that the ongoing militarization by China and the historical context of the 2020 clashes have affected the overall relationship between the two countries. He stressed that achieving peace and tranquility at the border is crucial for normalizing relations and further bilateral cooperation.
The disengagement process, which began in early 2021, has seen partial resolution in areas such as Galwan, Hot Springs, and Gogra. However, tensions persist, particularly in the Depsang Plains in northeastern Ladakh. Jaishankar’s comments come amidst ongoing diplomatic negotiations and military talks aimed at fully resolving the standoff.
In addition to military disengagement, Jaishankar addressed the broader implications for trade and economic relations between India and China. He acknowledged that while economic ties have been uneven and scrutinized, India remains open to business with China under revised terms.
The external affairs minister also mentioned discussions on resuming direct passenger flights between India and China, which had been halted since the standoff. As disengagement progresses, there is hope for gradual restoration of various bilateral engagements, including investment and travel.
