Ayushman Bharat Scheme: Age of 70+ Eligible for New Health Insurance Coverage

India has approved an expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to include senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their income. Announced on September 11, 2024, this initiative enhances healthcare access for the elderly, providing critical support to a vulnerable population.

Eligibility

  • Who is eligible? All seniors aged 70+ are eligible, including those already enrolled in AB PM-JAY and those previously uncovered.

Coverage Details

  • Existing beneficiaries: Seniors will receive an additional coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year, separate from the family’s existing policy.
  • New beneficiaries: Seniors not yet enrolled in AB PM-JAY will receive family-based coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year.

Integration with Other Health Schemes

  • Public schemes: Seniors covered by schemes like CGHS, ECHS, or Ayushman CAPF can either retain their current coverage or switch to AB PM-JAY.
  • Private insurance: Seniors under private health insurance or ESI can also access AB PM-JAY benefits.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the official website.
  2. Verification: Validate your Aadhaar or ration card at a PMJAY kiosk.
  3. Submit Proofs: Provide family identification documents.
  4. Get your e-Card: Receive an e-card with a unique AB PM-JAY ID.

Scheme Benefits

AB PM-JAY covers:

  • Medical consultations and treatment
  • Pre-hospitalisation care (up to 3 days before admission)
  • Medicines, medical implants, and ICU care
  • Diagnostics, laboratory investigations, and post-treatment complications

This expansion is expected to benefit 45 million families, reaching around 60 million senior citizens across India, ensuring greater healthcare accessibility and financial protection for the elderly population.
