India has approved an expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to include senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their income. Announced on September 11, 2024, this initiative enhances healthcare access for the elderly, providing critical support to a vulnerable population.
Eligibility
- Who is eligible? All seniors aged 70+ are eligible, including those already enrolled in AB PM-JAY and those previously uncovered.
Coverage Details
- Existing beneficiaries: Seniors will receive an additional coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year, separate from the family’s existing policy.
- New beneficiaries: Seniors not yet enrolled in AB PM-JAY will receive family-based coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year.
Integration with Other Health Schemes
- Public schemes: Seniors covered by schemes like CGHS, ECHS, or Ayushman CAPF can either retain their current coverage or switch to AB PM-JAY.
- Private insurance: Seniors under private health insurance or ESI can also access AB PM-JAY benefits.
