Protesting junior doctors in West Bengal have written to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other top officials, seeking their intervention in resolving the deadlock with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The doctors have been agitating since the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on August 9. In their letter, they expressed concerns about rising violence and threats against healthcare professionals and called for justice for their deceased colleague. Despite being invited for talks with the state government, the doctors refused to attend without a live telecast of the meeting. Chief Minister Banerjee, frustrated by the ongoing impasse, offered to resign, citing the public’s interest as her priority. President Murmu earlier expressed horror at the incident, criticizing the recurring nature of such crimes against women.
