Sitaram Yechury, CPI(M) general secretary and former Rajya Sabha MP, passed away at 72 after a prolonged illness. He had been in the ICU at AIIMS, Delhi, for respiratory tract infection and was on respiratory support. Yechury, who became CPI(M) general secretary in 2015, played a key role in Left politics and coalition governance.
